Can't Download macOS Tahoe beta 3 on Apple Silicone - It's a Bug

If you are unable to see the macOS Tahoe beta 3 update on your MacBook with an M 1,2,3, or 4 chip, the reason is most likely a temporary issue on Apple's end. According to MacRumors, there's a known bug preventing Apple silicon Macs (which include the M4 chip) from being able to download the current beta version. Intel Macs, however, are able to update without issue.

Apple will need to resolve this server-side bug before the update becomes available for Apple silicon Macs. You may need to wait until the issue is fixed for the beta update to appear in your Software Update settings.

To check for the update later, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen and select System Settings.
  2. Click General in the sidebar, then click Software Update on the right.
  3. If the beta update becomes available, you'll see it listed there.

Note: If you are a registered developer, you would normally download the beta software through the System Settings app by selecting the macOS Developer Tahoe Beta in the Beta Updates section. However, the current bug is preventing this for Apple silicon Macs.

Please be aware that installing beta software can sometimes lead to unexpected issues. It's always a good practice to back up your data before installing any beta software.

    • Apple has only issued the OTA update to Intel Macs right now.

The reason is because Rosetta for Apple silicon Macs on beta 3 is apparently broken, which is why they haven’t released it for Apple silicon Macs just yet.
