CEO Stockton Rush: "I have broken rules to make this: Carbon fiber and titanium don't mix
CEO Stockton Rush: "I have broken some rules to make this. (…) The carbon fibre and titanium there is a rule that you don’t do that. Well, I did.“
Carbon fiber and titanium are not used together because:
- Aluminum parts rubbing against the titanium frame can make some annoying sounds.
- Adhesion alone can make aircraft fan blades more vulnerable to fracture at the Ti–CFRP interface by possible impact from bird strike or other airborne debris during flight, along with heterogeneous stresses generated by the strong airflow of jet engine compressors2.
- When the combination is adhesively bonded, both parts will approach maximum yield strength and fail at a similar amount of total strain
- Titanium is difficult to weld, making it harder to repair.
- Titanium is denser and weaker than carbon fiber, making it heavier.
- Titanium frames are heavy, create more drag, and flex more, making them less efficient.
