Liz Cheney was born to a father, Dick Cheney, and a mother, Lynne Vincent. Her father, Dick Cheney is the former Vice President of the United States under George W. Bush and her mother is an author, scholar, and former talk-show host. Her younger sister, Mary Cheney, is associated with several political action groups.
Liz Cheney attended schools in Casper, Wyoming. She was a cheerleader at the ‘McLean High School,’ from where she graduated in 1984. Cheney completed her BA from ‘Colorado College.’ Her senior thesis, submitted in 1988, was titled ‘The Evolution of Presidential War Powers.’ She then graduated from the ‘University of Chicago Law School’ in 1996. Cheney also studied Middle Eastern history at the ‘Oriental Institute.’
Career
After graduating from Colorado College, Liz Cheney worked for the State Department for five years and the US Agency for International Development between 1989 and 1993. She then worked at the consulting firm, Armitage Associates LLP. The firm was founded by Richard Armitage. She also worked as an international law attorney and consultant at the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group. She served as Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State for Assistance to the former Soviet Union.
She also served as a USAID officer in US embassies in Budapest and Warsaw.
She joined the State Department after she was appointed the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs in 2002. Under the position, she overlooked the Middle East Partnership initiative. She left her position in 2003 to serve in her father’s 2004 Vice-Presidential reelection campaign. She returned to the State Department in 2005 after she was appointed Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State For Near Eastern Affairs and Coordinator of Broader Middle East and North Africa Initiatives. Under the position, she oversaw the launch of two semi-independent foundations, the Fund of the Future (to provide capital for small businesses) and the Foundation of the Future (to promote the press and democracy).
She endorsed a draft of a new Iraqi constitution. She headed the Iran Syria Policy and Operations Group (ISOG). It is a unit within the State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, established in 2006. After her tenure in the State Department, she signed on as one of three national co-chairs of Fred Thompson’s 2008 presidential campaign. Thompson dropped out of the race. She then became the senior foreign policy advisor for Mitt Romney’s 2008 presidential campaign.
Along with William Kristol and Deborah Burlingame, Liz launched the nonprofit organization, Keep America Safe in October 2009. The organization was set up to provide information for concerned Americans about critical national security issues. She joined Fox News as a contributor in January 2012 and guest-hosted Hannity and Fox News Sunday. Cheney left Fox News in July 2013 after she announced her intention to run for US Senate in Wyoming in 2014. Cheney received criticism from her championing of hawkish foreign policy positions to a public spat with her sister Mary over her vocal opposition to same-sex marriage.
Enzi’s popularity led Liz to withdraw from the race. She withdrew from the race citing family health issues in January 2014.
Cheney announced her candidacy for Wyoming’s lone seat in the US House of Representatives in February 2016. Cynthia Lummis had announced her retirement from the seat. Cheney won the general election with over 60% of the total votes. She was sworn into office in January 2017. Cheney was elected by the Republican membership as the Chair of the House Republican Conference for the 116th Congress.
In 2016, Cheney announced her run for the position of the U.S. representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district, after the Cynthia Lummis announced her retirement from the post in 2015. Oil industry businessman Simon Kukes aided her campaign. After she assumed her duties in January 2017, Cheney co-sponsored a bill that removed grey wolves from the ‘Endangered Species Act.’ As the 115th ‘Congress’ (January 2017 to January 2019) began, Cheney was appointed to the committees of ‘Armed Services’ and ‘Natural Resources.’ In the November 2018 general election, Liz Cheney was re-elected to the post without any opposition. The ‘Republicans’ voted her to the chair of the ‘House Republican Conference’ of the 116th ‘Congress’ (January 2019 to January 2021).
In May 2021, Cheney said that she intends to be “the leader, one of the leaders, in a fight to help to restore our party”. In an interview on ABC News’s This Week, she refused to rule out a presidential bid; this prompted media speculation about her interest in a presidential run in 2024. In June 2021, Cheney joined the board of the Gerald R. Ford Foundation.
