Trump's $400 Unemployment Executive Order Comes into Effect on August
Trump’s executive memorandum, renewing enhanced unemployment insurance takes effect as of 1 August - with jobseekers able to claim extra benefits retroactively up to that point - and is to last until either Sunday 6 December or when the balance of the Department of Homeland Security's Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) falls to $25 billion - whichever happens earlier. According to the memorandum, there is currently about $70 billion in the DRF.
$400 is halfway between the amount Democrats and Republicans have been seeking. While Democrat negotiators Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer want to maintain the $600 boost, GOP senators’ HEALS Act called for the figure to be reduced to $200 until October, before being replaced by a 70% wage-replacement scheme.
The president revealed that $300 of the $400 would be paid with federal money, while states would have to make up the remaining $100.
