VIDEO: Italian Cable Car Disaster Mottarone funicular overlooking Lake Maggiore

Italy's public broadcaster Rai has faced strong criticism for airing leaked CCTV footage of a fatal cable car crash that killed 14 people.

The cabin is seen nearing its final stop before suddenly rearing up, then speeding back down the mountain and crashing to the ground.

The prosecutor in the case spoke of "the absolute inappropriateness" of publishing the footage.

Fourteen people were killed when the lead cable of the Mottarone funicular overlooking Lake Maggiore in northern Italy snapped.

Prosecutors say the emergency brake, which could have prevented the accident, had been intentionally disabled. The car reversed at over 100km/h (62mph) on a support cable, passing a support pylon and then plummeting to the ground and rolling down the mountain.

The video shows how close the passengers were to safety before the cabin shot down a mountain to its doom.

Eitan Biran, the five-year-old Israeli who was the lone survivor of the crash, was discharged from the hospital last week after being admitted and treated for 18 days.
