American Airlines Cancelling 50 to 80 Flights Per Day Through July on A320 and 737 Aircraft

Hundreds of American Airlines flights have been canceled this weekend and Monday because of significant staffing and maintenance issues.

As of Sunday afternoon, 123 flights were canceled Saturday, 178 on Sunday and 97 were canceled for Monday – largely the result of a high number of sick calls, combined with maintenance and other staffing issues.

Travel demand has returned more sharply than many airline executives anticipated. Companies that provide catering, wheelchair pushers and fueling services are short staffed, which sometimes slows operations and creates inconveniences for customers, the American executive said. Cutting some flights will also alleviate pressure on maintenance and mean there will be a bigger pool of pilots on reserve, providing a buffer when needed.

Most of the cancelations are on A320 and 737 aircraft, American Airlines may continue to cancel at least 50 to 60 flights per day for the rest of June and 50 to 80 flights per day through July.
