NOW - Salman Rushdie is stabbed on stage in New York.

Rushdie has suffered a "stab wound to the neck, and was transported by helicopter to an area hospital."

The suspected assailant is in custody, NYPD say.

The award-winning novelist was previously targeted by Islamists after he released the novel The Satanic Verses.

Pakistan banned the book, and he was issued a fatwa – a death sentence - by Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989.
