From all the simulations that have been done and the accumulated evidence, it appears that rocky planets of comparable size collide with each other fairly frequently in the early stages of solar system development. In the event of a collision, one, larger planet appears, and a cloud of fragments, which is collected in one large satellite located nearby, and several smaller and more distant ones.

A perfect example of the result of such an event is the existence of our #Earth and #Moon.
