Despite looking very similar to Twitter, Donald Trump's new Truth Social platform may be safe from copyright infringement lawsuits, legal experts say.
The former president's new social media platform was launched on the Apple App Store on Monday, with a full rollout expected by late March.
It had long been reported that Truth Social may look very similar to the social network that banned Trump in the wake of the January 6 riot. However, the launch proved that Truth Social's interface is even closer to that of Twitter than other self-styled "free speech" platforms such as Gab, Gettr and Parler.
- Truth Social, a new social media platform backed by former President Donald Trump, sat at the top of Apple's download charts for free apps as of Tuesday morning.
- The platform unveiled a soft launch late Sunday, according to Reuters, with many users prompted to join a waitlist.
- The app is a product of the Trump Media & Technology Group, led by former Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif.
Digital World Acquisition Corp. , the so-called blank check group tied to former President Donald Trump's nascent media company, surged higher Tuesday after the 'Truth Social' app topped all downloads on Apple's online store.
The launch of the app on Presidents' Day marked nearly a year after Trump was permanently suspended from several social media platforms, including Twitter , Facebook and YouTube , following his role in inciting the violent protestors who stormed Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021.
The app, which was developed by Trump Media & Technology Group, is finding technical support and financial backing from the right-wing YouTube rival Rumble, as well as conservative investors such as former Facebook board member Peter Thiel.
Truth Social will be using Hive Automated content moderation solutions to monitor comments and content on the platform.
The wait time is long, it is very long.
The app, went live on 21 February to coincide with Presidents’ Day, it was opened to hundreds of testers on Friday ahead of the expected launch.
Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), is behind the development of the app, we have pledged to deliver an “engaging and censorship-free experience” on the platform.
It remains to be seen whether the app’s goal of freedom of expression can co-exist with Apple’s and Google’s app store policies and how much the platform will have to censor it's users.
