A Free State farmer, fed up with losing the battle against crime and worried about the high rate of murder at farms, has given new meaning to the adage ‘n boer maak ‘n plan’ (A Farmer makes a Plan) by swapping conventional security for a guard lion. The Afrikaans saying is often used to refer to the inventive nature of South Africans in the face of harsh realities and obstacles. It literally means the farmer makes a plan. In this video, the farmer lovingly refers to the lion as his “son”, gives him a playful scratch and allows the beast to explore his veranda. The lion is on patrol at night. The farmer’s video has gone viral, while the farmer has provided much entertainment on radio chat shows. Watch – and listen! – Jackie Cameron
